The moaning zombies were still not very close, but they were gaining on him. He picked a direction in the dark forest and ran. Suddenly, he spotted some lights not too far off. “I made it!” he said, running toward the lights. “That must be Main Street.”

But it wasn’t. After a few steps, Kane realized he was running toward a little shack. A couple of candles burned in the windows.

“It’s better than nothing,” he told himself. “If I don’t hide, the zombies will catch me.”

He ran up to the door and knocked. “Is anyone there?” he called out.

There was no answer right away. Kane didn’t have time to wait. He pushed the door open and looked around for someplace to hide in the one-room shack.

There was a cellar door in the middle of floor. He pulled it open and hurried down the rickety ladder into a dirt-floor basement.

Kane crouched into the corner and sat, waiting. Before too long, he heard a loud creaking. It sounded like someone had opened the front door. There were heavy steps over his head. Suddenly, a shaft of light came in through the cellar door.

Then a pair of old boots stepped slowly into the cellar.
